Summary
AWS partner tiers (Select, Advanced, Premier) reflect increasing levels of certified staff, completed engagements, and customer satisfaction data. The most important structural difference is that Premier partners must hold at least three AWS Competencies, each earned through audited production case studies. But tier alone does not guarantee expertise in your specific workload. For targeted initiatives, a focused Advanced partner with relevant competencies may be a stronger choice than a Premier partner without them.
When buyers filter for an AWS premier partner, they are usually looking for a partner AWS has already vetted. That instinct is correct. But what the tier label means in practice is more specific than many buyers realize.
AWS divides its services partners into three tiers: Select, Advanced, and Premier. All three cost the partner $2,500 per year in APN program fees. What separates them is documented evidence of certified staff, completed customer engagements, and customer satisfaction data.
An Advanced tier partner must have at least eight AWS-accredited individuals (four technical, four business), six AWS-certified technical staff with at least three holding Professional or Specialty certifications, and 20 completed customer engagements generating at least $10,000 in combined monthly recurring revenue. They must have a documented business plan and at least two verified public reviews or 20 customer satisfaction responses.
A Premier tier partner must reach a higher level of scale: 20 accredited individuals, 25 technical certifications with at least 10 at Professional or Specialty level, 50 completed customer engagements with at least $50,000 in combined MRR, 6 public reviews or 30 CSAT responses, and more than six months of sustained attainment of all criteria before the status is formally granted.
Keep in mind that these are the minimum requirements to reach each tier and both require a track record of customer satisfaction, successful projects that went to production, and staff expertise.
The most meaningful structural difference between Advanced and Premier is not the certification count. It is the competency requirement.
Advanced tier partners have no minimum AWS Competency requirement. Premier tier partners must hold at least three AWS Competencies, and one must be in MSP, DevOps, or CloudOps.
An AWS Competency is not an exam. To earn one, a partner must submit multiple production customer case studies with detailed technical evidence (number varies by competency). Proofs of concept do not count. AWS reviews the application against a published Validation Checklist. The process can take several months.
This is AWS auditing real delivery outcomes, not testing knowledge. When a partner holds a relevant competency, AWS has reviewed production deployments in that specific domain and confirmed the work meets its standards.
That is the accountability signal buyers are actually looking for, and it sits at the competency level, not just the tier level.
Premier tier reflects breadth and organizational scale. It does not guarantee deep expertise in your specific workload.
A Premier partner with 50+ completed engagements across general cloud migrations may have no meaningful production experience with AI agents, intelligent document processing, or regulated data environments. A focused Advanced partner who has delivered 20+ AI and ML implementations on AWS may be a better match for a targeted initiative.
When evaluating any partner, the question worth asking is: do they hold AWS Competencies in the area I am hiring them for? A relevant competency is a stronger indicator than tier alone, because competencies require audited production proof in the specific domain.
Tier establishes a floor. Specialization in your use case tells you about their specific, vetted experience.
Three things worth checking before selecting an AWS consulting partner:
For most SMB and mid-market AI initiatives, the right partner is not necessarily the largest one. It is the one with verified production experience in the specific problem you are solving.
